Clean Coast 2022 – an invitation to get involved and take part in the clean-up
campaign
On Saturday, 17 September 2022, the thirteenth Clean Coast clean-up campaign will take place along the Slovenian coast.
Timetable:
09:30 – meet at designated locations
10:00 – 12:00 – clean-up and waste
recording 13:30 – 15:30 – “Clean Coast under the microscope”; – socialising and discussion with experts and NGO representatives
After the clean-up, from 13:30 onwards, we invite you to join us for lemonade at HEKO in Koper (Cesta Zore Perello – Godina 3). Under the microscope, you will first be able to examine the microplastics floating in Slovenian waters. At 14:30, experts and NGO representatives will outline the current state of marine litter and discuss actions that can help keep our seas cleaner.
This year, ‘Clean Coast’ is once again taking place as part of the world’s largest voluntary clean-up campaign for coasts, seas and lakes – the International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) – organised under the auspices of the Water Institute of the Republic of Slovenia, the TRI-NITI Institute, in collaboration with Europe Direct Koper-Capodistria (PiNA) and the World Swim project. Also actively participating in the campaign are the Debeli Rtič Landscape Park and the Strunjan Landscape Park, the Municipality of Ankaran, Marjetica Koper, Komunala Izola, Okolje Piran, the Slovenian Maritime Administration, the Slovenian Water Directorate, VGP Drava Ptuj, numerous associations and volunteers. The aim of the campaign is to raise public awareness of marine litter pollution along the Slovenian coast, to actively involve volunteers in coastal clean-ups, and to collect data on the volume and composition of the litter.
The campaign is co-funded by the Ministry of the Environment and Spatial Planning.
This year, Martin Strel is also joining the campaign; a Slovenian ultra-marathon swimmer and multiple Guinness World Record holder, who is preparing for his expedition and global challenge, WORLD SWIM – a swim around the world, with the slogan “swimming for the environment, friendship, peace and clean waters”. During the campaign itself, he will announce the expedition by swimming and monitoring the Slovenian sea, and will later join the discussion.
The clean-up campaign is taking place across all coastal municipalities, from Lazaret to Seča. After mandatory registration, each participant will receive the exact location of the clean-up and detailed information. The clean-up is carried out in groups (3–7 people per group), in which one of the volunteers records the waste whilst the others carry out the clean-up. Each location has its own coordinator who collects data, which is published in the annual press release. At the location, each participant receives gloves, bin bags and inventory sheets, as well as instructions for working safely.
Due to organisational requirements, registration is compulsory. You can register for the campaign by 14 September 2022 at the latest via the online registration form.
