Research and development activities
The Department of Information Technology is the Institute’s digital and information hub, responsible for developing advanced data and information solutions to support water management. It develops methodologies for the acquisition, processing, and analysis of data from a wide range of sources, including remote sensing, modelling, spatial datasets, and other environmental information sources.
By integrating, processing, and visualising data, the Department transforms complex datasets into meaningful information that supports scientific analyses, evidence-based decision-making, and the implementation of national and European water policies. A key part of its work is the development of digital tools and information systems that provide scientific and technical support to the Ministry of the Environment and Spatial Planning (MOP), other competent authorities, and decision-makers involved in water management, planning, and policy implementation.
The Department works closely with all professional departments of the Institute to develop modern field data acquisition methods, automate analytical workflows, and implement advanced data management and geospatial technologies. By combining scientific knowledge, digital technologies, and user-oriented solutions, it strengthens the science–policy interface and contributes to efficient, data-driven, and sustainable water management.
