On Wednesday 23 October 2019, the 2nd national workshop on ‘Sediment Management’ took place at the House of the European Union; it was organised as part of the DanubeSediment project (Sediment Management in the Danube Basin, INTERREG – Danube Region Programme).
The aim of the workshop was to present the results of the DanubeSediment project, which is due to conclude at the end of November this year, and to discuss the challenges we face in sediment management in the future. The workshop was attended by 10 stakeholders from three different sectors (management, hydropower, fisheries), each of whom contributes to the issue of sediment management in their own way. The first part consisted of a presentation of the results, whilst the second part provided an opportunity for discussion.
During the discussion, it was highlighted that the next step is to draw up a sediment management concept, which will also need to address outstanding issues relating primarily to monitoring the situation. Sediment deposits provide a spawning substrate for aquatic organisms and fish and, because of this role, are of exceptional importance for biodiversity. On the other hand, the operators of transverse structures are seeking a decision on the conditions under which sediment can be removed from the reservoirs of these structures.
