General information about the project

Full project title: Strategic Planning for Alpine Riverine Ecosystems – Integrating protection and development

Slovenian project title: Strategic planning and coordination in the field of conservation and restoration of Alpine riverine ecosystems

Project acronym: SPARE

Project code: ASP170

Programme: Interreg Alpine Space Transnational Programme

With a view to improving the living environment in the Alpine region, the SPARE project was launched in early 2016 as part of the Interreg Alpine Space transnational programme – Strategic Planning and Coordination for the Conservation and Restoration of Alpine Riverine Ecosystems (SPARE – Strategic Planning for Alpine Riverine Ecosystems – Integrating protection and development) was launched in early 2016 as part of the Interreg Alpine Space Transnational Programme. The main objective of the project for Slovenia is, in accordance with regulations and strategic guidelines on water management and nature conservation, to provide methodological and procedural support for decision-making on priorities for the conservation or restoration of riverine ecosystems, as well as for justifying deviations from environmental objectives due to the use of water and water spaces or protection against the harmful effects of water.

Key tasks of the SPARE project are:

  1. reviewing good practices (in the Alpine region and beyond) and organising a workshop with invited experts on selected good practices
  2. analysing and testing selected appropriate methodological approaches for identifying priority sections of watercourses for conservation (establishing criteria for assessing the vulnerability of the aquatic environment, the possibility of introducing the concept of ecosystem services) and analysing the suitability of watercourses for water use and water-related activities (criteria for assessing needs and attractiveness)
  3. implementation of a participatory process, analysis and decision-making amongst stakeholders responsible for achieving the objectives of good water status, and stakeholders responsible for achieving objectives related to the use of water and water space and protection against the harmful effects of water.

Project duration
