MEDCIS – Support for EU Member States in the Mediterranean region for the harmonised and coordinated implementation of the second cycle of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive
IZVRS is a partner in the MEDCIS project. The lead partner is the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (Greece), and the other partners are: the Institut Français de Recherche pour l’Exploitation de la Mer (France), the Fundación AZTI – AZTI Fundazioa (Spain), University of Salento – Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences and Technologies (Italy), Consorzio per il coordinamento delle ricerche inerenti al sistema lagunare di Venezia (Italy), the Instituto Español de Oceanografía (Spain), the National Institute of Biology (Slovenia), the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (Greece) and the Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries (Croatia).
The aim of the MEDCIS project is to accelerate the implementation of the second cycle of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) in the Mediterranean Sea by developing criteria and methodological standards for harmonised approaches among EU Member States; specifically by reviewing, comparing, selecting and adapting relevant existing approaches regarding criteria, methodological standards and protocols at regional/sub-regional level. We will focus on Mediterranean regional/ sub-regional cooperation and standardisation, and recommend appropriate approaches for this region to ensure consistency between the approaches selected by individual EU Member States and to enable comparisons at all possible levels within the region.
IZVRS’s activities within the MEDCIS project:
- Developing common approaches and methodologies for determining good environmental status (GES) and environmental target values in the regions and sub-regions of the Mediterranean Sea (descriptor D2 – non-indigenous species, descriptor D10 – marine litter).
- Preparing proposals for common approaches to carrying out assessments of the current state of marine waters in the regions and sub-regions of the Mediterranean Sea (descriptor D10 – marine litter, descriptor D11 – underwater noise).
- Preparing proposals to improve joint monitoring programmes (with a focus on D2 – alien species and D10 – marine litter), and collecting and analysing data in the regions and sub-regions of the Mediterranean Sea.
- Developing tools and mechanisms to describe and assess progress in implementing the programme of measures. Developing a catalogue of measures and analysing coordination at regional level for descriptors: D1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10. Assessing the implementation process and the effectiveness of the programme of measures.
- Participation in the promotion and dissemination of the results of the MEDCIS project.
The MEDCIS project supports Community measures in the field of marine environment policy, as set out in the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD).
