With a view to developing methodologies for assessing ecological status in accordance with the Water Framework Directive in Slovenia, we have identified fish types in watercourses within the Dinaric and Po Plain hydro-ecoregions. The fish types were identified on the basis of similarities in fish communities. The description of fish communities (fish types) serves as the basis for establishing reference conditions and developing a methodology for assessing ecological status based on fish. We carried out this work in collaboration with the Slovenian Fisheries Institute.
