General information about the project

Full project title: Hydromorphological assessment and management at basin scale for the conservation of Alpine rivers and related ecosystem services

Slovenian project title: Hydromorphological assessment and management of river basins for the conservation of Alpine watercourses and associated ecosystem services

Project acronym: HYMOCARES

Project code: ASP445

Programme: Interreg Alpine Space Transnational Programme

In line with the objective of improving the hydromorphological status of watercourses in the Alpine region, the HyMoCARES project was launched in early 2017 as part of the Interreg Alpine Space transnational programme – HydroMorphological assessment and management at basin scale for the Conservation of Alpine Rivers and related Ecosystem Services – was launched in early 2017 under the Interreg Alpine Space transnational programme. The main objective of the project for Slovenia is, in accordance with regulations and strategic guidelines on water management and nature conservation, to improve the hydromorphological status of watercourses by introducing the concept of ecosystem services, such as, for example, improved flood protection, optimised renewable energy production, the conservation of biodiversity and, last but not least, bringing watercourses closer to users from the perspectives of culture, education and tourism.

The key tasks and expected outcomes of the HyMoCARES project are:

  1. to develop a set of methods and tools for a more accurate assessment of the scope of ecosystem services provided by a specific river ecosystem and their current status,
  2. developing a framework for monitoring the effects and benefits of specific measures planned to improve sediment transport connectivity and the ecological status of Alpine rivers,
  3. the development of a framework for assessing the impacts of various activities and measures on individual ecosystem services and their interrelationships;
  4. preparing the foundations for planning optimal scenarios for action and development (planning the use of water and riparian areas, management, restoration of river ecosystems, etc.) with an optimal impact on the availability of ecosystem services,
  5. promoting the results to target groups (primarily experts and decision-makers in the field of achieving good water status and nature conservation) for their incorporation into the implementation processes of EU directives and national regulations.

We will test the implementation of the above in Slovenia in a pilot area – the section of the River Drava between the Zlatoličje and Formin hydroelectric power stations.
