You are cordially invited to watch a short feature on the presence of micro- and macro-waste in our waters on Saturday, 8 June 2019 at 7.15 pm on RTV Slovenia’s Channel 1, as part of the programme *Sobotni dnevnikov izbor*.
The feature will showcase a pilot monitoring programme being carried out by experts from the Water Research Institute of the Republic of Slovenia. The pilot monitoring programme involves sampling micro- and macro-waste in the water column of the coastal rivers Rižana and Dragonja, monitoring the presence of waste on the coast, and laboratory analysis of the waste; the presence of microplastics in Slovenian waters will also be highlighted.
The Water Institute of the Republic of Slovenia carried out its first assessment of the state of coastal pollution in 2007. In 2011, it carried out the first sampling of microplastics on the sea surface (one of the first in the Adriatic Sea), which continues to this day. In 2015, it expanded its scope of work and research into water pollution caused by waste to include the analysis of microplastics on the surface and in the sediment of Lake Bled and the River Ljubljanica, as well as the analysis of effluent from municipal wastewater treatment plants.
In addition to preparing technical reports and carrying out sampling and analysis, IzVRS also focuses on raising public awareness and encouraging waste reduction. This is precisely the aim of the aforementioned report, which will highlight the issue of waste in our waters.
