World Earth Day – a talk on the issue of plastic waste and microplastics in the environment

On Friday, 22 April 2022, to mark World Earth Day, we highlighted the issue of plastic waste and microplastics in the environment. The presentation took place at the Postojna School Centre, and the talk was attended by around 60 participants. The event was organised by the Postojna–Cerknica Rotary Club.
Conclusion of the ‘Plastic Pirates – Let’s Go Europe’ project

On 8 December, as part of Science Month, the closing event for the ‘Plastic Pirates’ project took place – Let’s Go Europe – which, over the course of a year, introduced more than 1,400 pupils and students from 100 Slovenian schools to citizen science and the issue of plastic pollution. The young people assisted scientists in their pioneering work – the large-scale sampling of microplastics in Slovenian rivers, which, according to current results, has revealed that more than three-quarters of the rivers analysed are contaminated.

RTV Slovenia broadcast an educational documentary series called *Biotopi* entitled ‘Plastic in Nature’, in which staff from the Slovenian Water Institute also discussed this issue.

Marine litter – teaching resources for primary and secondary school teachers

This resource is intended for teachers in primary and secondary schools who would like to learn more about the issue of marine litter, find inspiration for incorporating this topic into their lessons, and thereby do something positive for the environment.
Organisation of Eight Regional Consultations on the Draft 2015–2021 Water Management Plan
The Institute for Water planned, organised and carried out eight regional consultations on the draft 2015–2021 Water Management Plan for the Ministry of the Environment and Spatial Planning. The eight consultations discussed the river basins of the Sava (lower, middle and upper), Drava, Mura and Savinja and the catchment areas of the Soča and the Adriatic rivers including the sea. Over 440 people actively participated in moderated consultations that took place in Novo mesto, Maribor, Murska Sobota, Koper, Idrija, Ljubljana, Kranj and Celje.
Raising Public Awareness in Areas of Significant Impact of Floods: A Non-Structural Flood Protection Measure
In 2015, as part of its activities aimed at decreasing flood risk in areas of potential significant flood risk in Slovenia, the Institute for Water of the Republic of Slovenia is organising a series of awareness raising events in collaboration with the Ministry of the Environment and Spatial Planning.
