At the start of 2017, the DanubeSediment project was launched under the Interreg Danube Transnational programme. It addresses the issue of imbalances in the sediment budget, which can lead to an increased risk of flooding, reduced hydropower potential, reduced navigability and, last but not least, a loss of biodiversity in the river basin. The main objective of the project is to improve water management in the area of sediment management and, consequently, to improve the condition of the Danube river basin. Countries in the Danube catchment area (including Slovenia) have not paid much attention to sediment management in the past. The project’s outcomes, which will also be of use to our country and stakeholders in Slovenia, will be a handbook for stakeholders and guidelines for sediment management. IzVRS is actively involved in promoting the project and presenting the results to a wider professional and lay audience, as well as in compiling a catalogue of measures and impacts, which is crucial for the development of guidelines for sediment management.
An international stakeholder workshop on sediment management measures will be organised in Bucharest, Romania, at the end of June. The aim of the workshop is to present and discuss the proposed measures and examples of good practice addressing sediment management in the Danube catchment. Stakeholders from Slovenia are also invited to attend the workshop.
