At the Slovenian Water Institute, we issued a statement on the harmful effects of microplastics on human health. The report was broadcast on the Dnevnik programme on 22 August 2019.

According to findings by scientists at the World Health Organisation (WHO), microplastics in drinking water pose only a low risk to health. However, the authors of the study also point out that these findings are based on limited information. Above all, it is unclear what harm the smallest particles, known as ‘nanoplastics’, pose to humans.

As part of its remit, the Slovenian Water Institute has carried out preliminary analyses of drinking water and found only a small presence of microparticles in drinking water.
