Europe’s shift towards a green, sustainable economy requires the conservation of the natural environment and the strong integration of its benefits – or ecosystem services – into all sectoral objectives. The more ecosystem services a given area provides, the more that area is recognised as green infrastructure. In this context, biodiversity services are recognised as the leading factor. The identification and redesign/planning of green infrastructure is a process that takes place at various spatial levels. To ensure its success, it requires technical and legal support. This handbook offers possible approaches and tools, whilst also inviting further discussion and coordination, as well as its successful development in 2020.
