RTV Slovenia broadcast an educational documentary series called *Biotopi* entitled ‘Plastic in Nature’, in which staff from the Slovenian Water Institute also discussed this issue.

In the programme, experts from the Slovenian Water Institute demonstrated methods for sampling micro- and macro-waste in Slovenian rivers, the sea and along the Slovenian coast, and discussed the problem of plastic waste in the natural environment, which is the most common type of litter found in the wild. Plastic is a lightweight, durable and inexpensive synthetic material with an exceptionally long lifespan. However, all these qualities also mean that plastic causes one of the greatest environmental problems of our time. In Europe alone, more than 65 million tonnes of plastic are produced each year, whilst 30 million tonnes end up in the natural environment annually. Less than a third of all plastic is recycled; the rest ends up in landfill, is incinerated or remains in the environment – in the natural world.
