National stakeholder workshop on the Lower Sava – Danubesediment_Q2
On Monday, 2 December 2024, the Water Institute of the Republic of Slovenia organised the first national stakeholder workshop as part of the DanubeSediment_Q2 project. The workshop was hosted by Hidroelektrarne na Spodnji Savi, where the selected pilot area in Slovenia is located. Participants from various sectors, such as water management, environmental monitoring, hydropower, nature conservation, fisheries and the non-governmental sector, spent the morning in the field, where we inspected the pilot area on the Lower Sava from the Boštanj hydroelectric power station to the Brežice hydroelectric power station. Our host (HESS) demonstrated the challenges of sediment management they face in the field and outlined those they can expect in the future.
In the second part of the day, we held a workshop during which we presented the project, the pilot area and the planned activities; participants were then given the opportunity to play an active role in shaping the project outcomes. From the range of proposed measures, they selected those that would best address sediment management. The general conclusion was that sediment management should be planned at the catchment level rather than locally, solely in areas where sediment is disrupting the natural balance. We will endeavour to make the best possible use of the feedback we received from participants when testing the measures in the pilot area in Slovenia.
