World Water Day: Protecting glaciers and strengthening resilience to floods and landslides
To mark World Water Day, which is celebrated on 22 March, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Spatial Planning (MNVP), in collaboration with the Water Institute of the Republic of Slovenia, organised an event at which experts discussed hydrological challenges in the context of climate change and human intervention.
The Minister for Natural Resources and Spatial Planning, Jože Novak, emphasised the importance of post-flood recovery and, more broadly, of strengthening the climate resilience of river basins. The Ministry of Natural Resources and Spatial Planning is committed to integrated water management, which incorporates social, developmental and environmental aspects.
The United Nations has declared 2025 the International Year of Glacier Conservation, highlighting their crucial role in regulating the climate and providing drinking water. In Slovenia, water resources from catchment areas covered by snow have a major impact on the stability of rivers and groundwater, whilst also posing risks such as landslides and torrential flooding.
The event was accompanied by a photographic exhibition of artistic photographs by the Ljubljana Photo Club on the theme of water, entitled: Timeless Water.
