The Director of IzVRS presented the launch of work on a project to develop a digital twin of the aquatic environment at an international conference on digital solutions in water management

Portorož, 5 November 2025 – The Director of IzVRS, Mag. Neža Kodre, presented a new project to develop a digital twin of the aquatic environment at the international conference ‘Digital Solutions for Water Management’, which took place in Portorož on 5 and 6 November 2025.

The conference was excellently organised and delivered by the Slovenian Water Agency as part of the ‘Green Slovenian Spatial Framework – Slo4D’ project, funded by the EU, the Climate Fund and the Slovenian national budget. The event brought together domestic and international experts in the field of the digital transformation of water management and provided a valuable opportunity to exchange experiences and ideas.

In her presentation, the Director of IzVRS emphasised that this marks the start of the development of a digital twin based on traditional water management expertise – specifically, hydraulic models and the results of many years of work by the Slovenian water management sector. Within the framework of the project, these models are being enhanced with advanced digital technologies, satellite and ground-based data, and artificial intelligence.

“A digital twin is not a substitute for a model or an expert – it is the next step, combining data from various sources and enabling the simulation of scenarios across a wider area,” emphasised Kodre. “It is a tool that will help us better understand and simulate floods, and will assist with spatial planning and strategic decision-making.”
