A specialist conference was held in Brdo pri Kranju to mark World Water Day, aimed at strengthening resilience in the field of water management in Slovenia. The event, which was co-organised by the Water Institute of the Republic of Slovenia (IzVRS), was organised in collaboration with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Spatial Planning and the Water Directorate of the Republic of Slovenia, and brought together more than 200 participants from the professional, research and decision-making sectors.
Minister Jože Novak emphasised that water is not merely a natural resource, but the foundation of development, health, safety and quality of life, and highlighted the importance of a holistic approach to water management.
Neža Kodre, MA, Director of IzVRS, and Dr Tomaž Rodič, Director of the Vesolje-SI Centre, presented the development of a digital twin of river basins for simulating flood scenarios. This involves integrating and upgrading existing hydrological and hydraulic models, enabling faster testing of various scenarios across wider areas and supporting spatial planning and strategic decision-making.
In this context, Neža Kodre, MA, emphasised:
“On World Water Day, we often reflect on how unpredictable water is – the digital twin is a tool that will help us better visualise this unpredictability. In this way, we will support the preparation of spatial planning documents and various strategic decisions, thereby contributing to greater resilience.”
By integrating data and models in this way, IzVRS contributes to a better understanding of water processes and to more effective and resilient water management in Slovenia.
The data that IzVRS collects and integrates within the Geo Slovenia community also represent an important part of this development.
