Ljubljana, 22 April 2026 – On International Earth Day, a ceremony was held in Ljubljana to present the Marko Vincenc Lipold plaques, with which the Geological Survey of Slovenia (GeoZS) recognises significant scientific, research, development and professional achievements in the field of geology.
The opening part of the event was devoted to reflecting on the role of science in addressing environmental challenges. The gathering was addressed by the Director of GeoZS, Dr Miloš Bavec, the President of the Republic of Slovenia, Dr Nataša Pirc Musar, and the Minister for Natural Resources and Spatial Planning, Jože Novak.
During the main part of the event, the recipients of the awards included a group of four researchers for the development of the first joint patent between the Geological Survey of Slovenia and the Water Research Institute of the Republic of Slovenia (IzVRS), including Dr Tine Bizjak.
The 
patent represents a significant advance in the field of sampling microplastics and other particles in water, as it enables more accurate, reliable and reproducible sampling in various aquatic environments and reduces the risk of contamination. The solution, which is also patented at European level, directly contributes to improving the quality of data that is crucial for understanding the state of water bodies and making evidence-based decisions.
This recognition confirms that the pooling of knowledge and cooperation between institutions yield concrete, practical solutions. For IzVRS, this is a clear signal that the chosen development direction is the right one – and, at the same time, a commitment to continue developing solutions for water protection and responding to climate challenges with the same level of ambition.
