As part of the STRIVER project, two important events have taken place over the last two weeks, aimed at discussing the future of the River Kolpa, the challenges facing the region and opportunities for improved cooperation between Slovenia and Croatia.
On Tuesday, 9 June 2026, the Slovenian project partners organised a consultation meeting and workshop for representatives of Slovenian institutions and the local community. The aim of the event was to gain a better understanding of the situation on the ground and expectations regarding the future management of the River Kolpa and its surrounding area. Participants highlighted three key challenges in the Kolpa river basin: flooding, droughts and water quality. The discussion also focused on developing a shared vision for the Kolpa that would bring together the perspectives of the project partners and the local community.
The second meeting took place on Thursday, 18 June 2026, in Rijeka, where project partners from Slovenia and Croatia met. They were joined by representatives of various institutions from both sides of the border. The meeting featured a presentation of the project’s activities to date, the analyses carried out and the data collected, which will form an important basis for further work. The challenges highlighted by participants at the first workshop were also presented.
As part of the project, the Water Institute of the Republic of Slovenia is preparing a review of Slovenian legislation in the field of water management in Slovenia. At the meeting, a representative of the Institute presented the findings to date regarding regulations affecting water, water-related land and areas along rivers. It was emphasised that water management is influenced not only directly by water regulations, but also by legislation from other areas, such as environmental protection. The review of legislation is an important part of the project, as harmonisation with Croatian legislation will also be necessary to develop joint and sustainable solutions.
Through the STRIVER project, the partners are continuing to strengthen cross-border cooperation between Slovenia and Croatia. The common aim is to gain a better understanding of the challenges facing the Kolpa region, to improve preparedness for extreme weather and climate events, and to contribute to more thoughtful management of the riverine area.
