Earlier this year, the DanubeSediment_Q2 project was launched, continuing on from the ‘Sediment Management in the Danube River Basin’ project – or DanubeSediment for short – which ran from 2017 to 2019. The DanubeSediment project established, for the first time, transnational cooperation between institutions along the Danube river basin, with the aim of achieving integrated sediment management in the Danube river basin. The project gathered data on methods and results of monitoring sediment transport along the Danube river basin and produced Guidelines for Sediment Management and a Sediment Management Handbook for stakeholders, which sets out a range of possible measures addressing this issue.
In the DanubeSediment_Q2 project, we will continue with sediment management activities in the Danube catchment area, where we are pursuing three objectives, namely:
- To improve the monitoring of sediment conditions in the Danube catchment area.
- Verifying the proposed measures in pilot areas.
- To develop a cross-border plan for the integrated management of sediment in the Danube catchment area.
IzVRS will participate in the project to help achieve all three objectives. It will focus on verifying the proposed measures in the pilot area in Slovenia, which is on the Lower Sava. Two models will be developed: a 1D model of sediment transport balance along the entire Lower Sava, and a more detailed 2D model within the flow-through reservoir of the Boštanj hydroelectric power station, where various scenarios involving the proposed measures will be tested. The scenarios and verified measures will serve as a basis for drawing up a sediment management plan both in Slovenia and in other Danube countries. A similar approach will be adopted in other Danube Basin countries, with the common aim of improving sediment management in the Danube Basin.
Fifteen partners from the Danube catchment area are participating in the project. In addition to IzVRS, the Geological Survey of Slovenia (GeoZS) is also involved from Slovenia; in the past, GeoZS led the SIMONA project, which focused on sediment quality in the Danube region. Three strategic partners from Slovenia have also joined the project: DRSV, ARSO and HESS. The lead partner in the project is the University of Vienna (BOKU).
