Updating the methodologies for assessing the ecological status and classifying surface water bodies on the basis of biological quality elements, as drawn up in 2013
As part of surface water management, methodologies for assessing the ecological status of water bodies must be developed for each biological quality element (BQE). Methodologies for assessing ecological status were adopted in Slovenia by the Decree on the Status of Surface Waters (the Decree) and the Rules on the Monitoring of the Status of Surface Waters (the Rules) in 2009. Following their adoption, a number of new methodologies for assessing ecological status based on biological quality elements were developed, whilst existing methodologies were updated. Upon completion of the second phase of intercalibration (harmonisation) of methods for assessing ecological status based on BQEs at European level, the Commission Decision of 20 September 2013, setting out the updated methodologies for assessing ecological status and the threshold values between ecological status classes, as harmonised during the intercalibration process. On the basis of these results, we prepared an expert proposal for amendments to the Regulation and the Rules in 2013.
As part of this task, in 2015 we prepared a proposal for amendments to the methodologies for assessing the ecological status of waters, based on the expert proposal for amendments to the Regulation and the Rules from 2013, which incorporated the results of the second phase of intercalibration and the amendments to the methodologies for assessing ecological status that had been prepared and harmonised in Slovenia by the end of 2015.
