The monitoring of the status of watercourses in Slovenia serves to assess the chemical and ecological status of surface waters. The basic principles of monitoring are laid down in the Water Framework Directive, which establishes uniform principles for monitoring and assessing the status of water bodies for all Member States of the European Union. In Slovenia, the monitoring of the status of surface waters is regulated by the Rules on the Monitoring of Surface Waters, whilst the monitoring of the status of groundwater is regulated by the Rules on the Monitoring of Groundwater. The monitoring of water quality in areas with specific requirements is further governed by a number of additional regulations. Water status monitoring tracks changes in water status based on biological quality elements and hydromorphological and physico-chemical parameters, which may result from changes in natural conditions (e.g. climate change) or human activity (e.g. the operation of hydroelectric power stations).
As part of this task, we monitor the impact of hydroelectric power station operations on the River Soča (across the entire concession area of the River Soča from Tolmin to Solkan) on water status. In accordance with the monitoring plan, we monitor hydrological and physico-chemical parameters, as well as the ecological status based on phytobenthos, benthic invertebrates and fish, either annually or at three-yearly intervals.
