The Water Research Institute was the lead partner in the international SEE River project – Integrated Management of International River Corridors in South-Eastern Europe. The aim of the project was to reach an agreement on the management of river corridors that takes into account both development and conservation aspects on six selected international rivers: the Drava, Bodrog, Neretva, Prut, Soča and Vjosa. The project introduced a new approach to the management and planning of river use and the surrounding areas: project activities were carried out within the river corridor, i.e. the part of the catchment area along the river where human impact is greatest.
Project partnership
The project involved 26 leading institutions and organisations involved in the management of river corridors across 12 countries in South-Eastern and Central Europe, representing a wide range of specialist fields: water management, nature conservation, energy, spatial planning and others.

Results of the international project
- the SEE River handbook,
- an action plan for the integrated management of the international Drava River corridor,
- five local action plans — agreements between stakeholders from various sectors on the management of five pilot areas in the countries along the Drava River corridor,
- five draft action plans for the integrated management of the Bodrog, Neretva, Prut, Soča and Vjosa river corridors,
- a selection of examples of good practice in the integrated management of international river corridors,
- training seminars to share knowledge and experience,
- a set of proposals for future projects,
- a sustainability plan for the continued cooperation of partners and stakeholders in the SEE River project network
