COHENET – Achieving Coordinated Networks of Marine Protected Areas: An Analysis of the Situation in the Mediterranean Sea
IzVRS is a regional partner in the COHENET project. The lead partner is the Belgian consultancy ARCADIS, which is managing the project in collaboration with the Consorzio per il coordinamento delle ricerche inerenti al sistema lagunare di Venezia – CORILA (Italy), whilst the other regional partners are: the Instituto Español de Oceanografía (Spain) and the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (Greece).
The aim of the project is to contribute to the European Commission’s work on developing and testing a methodology for assessing the effectiveness and coherence of networks of marine protected areas, and to provide tools for evaluating potential shortcomings inand their consistency. The project will assess the current status of Mediterranean marine protected areas and other effective spatial nature conservation measures, assess the coherence and effectiveness of marine protected area networks in the Adriatic Sea (to what extent they can contribute to the implementation of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive – 2008/56/EC) and provide concrete recommendations for improving the effectiveness and coordination of marine protected area networks in the Adriatic Sea.
The work on the project is divided into two tasks and a networking activity with relevant stakeholders in the Mediterranean region:
- Task 1: Collection of data on marine protected areas at the Mediterranean level, with a particular focus on the Adriatic Sea.
- Task 2: Coordination analysis (Study in the Adriatic Sea)
- Networking in the Mediterranean
The COHENET project supports Community measures in the field of marine environment policy, as set out in the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD), the Habitats and Birds Directives (92/43/EEC and 2009/147/EC), the Common Fisheries Policy (Regulation (EU) No 1380/2013) and the Maritime Spatial Planning Directive (2014/89/EU). More broadly, the project also addresses the requirements of Aichi Target 11 of the Convention on Biological Diversity and United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 14.5.
