QUIETMED – Joint programme on underwater noise for the implementation of the second cycle of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive in the Mediterranean Sea
IZVRS is a partner in the QUIETMED project. The lead partner is the Centro Tecnológico Naval y del Mar (Spain), and the other partners are: the Instituto Español de Oceanografía (Spain), the Universitat Politècnica de Valencia (Spain), Service hydrographique et océanographique de la marine (France), Istituto Superiore per la Protezione e la Ricerca Ambientale (Italy), Permanent Secretariat of the Agreement on the Conservation of Cetaceans of the Black Sea, the Mediterranean Sea and the contiguous Atlantic Sea (Monaco), The Conservation Biology Research Group, the University of Malta (Malta), the Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries (Croatia) and the Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (Greece).
The aim of the QUIETMED project is to improve the level of coordination and comparability in the implementation of the second cycle of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) for Descriptor 11 – underwater noise – in the Mediterranean Sea, based on enhanced cooperation between Member States of the European Union, the Barcelona Convention and third countries. We will develop common approaches for determining Good Environmental Status (GES) and setting threshold values, we will draw up methodological guidelines and policy recommendations for the review of national assessments of the current state of marine waters and environmental target values, and we will establish a joint regional register of impulsive noise.
IZVRS activities within the QUIETMED project:
- Review of the 2012 national assessments of the current status of marine waters (MSFD, Article 8) for Descriptor 11 – underwater noise, and the development of recommendations for EU Member States based on a regional approach;
- Work on a common understanding and methodology for determining Good Environmental Status (GES) for impulsive and continuous noise in the Mediterranean;
- Definition of limit values for underwater noise in the Mediterranean;
- Selection of the most appropriate methodologies for monitoring underwater noise in the Mediterranean Sea;
- Development of standards and common recommendations for the calibration of equipment and data processing;
- A preparatory study for the development of a common register of impulsive noise;
- Liaising with other projects and initiatives;
- Participation in workshops.
The QUIETMED project supports Community measures in the field of marine environment policy, as set out in the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD).
