Sediment management in Alpine basins: integrating the sediment continuum, risk mitigation and hydropower

The SedAlp project is funded by the European Territorial Cooperation Programme ‘Alpine Space’ under Priority 3: Environment and Risk Prevention. The SedAlp project consortium comprises partners from five Alpine countries, who have been working within the project to promote more integrated planning in the field of sediment and flood management in Alpine river basins.

As part of the SedAlp project, IzVRS, together with its subcontractor Hidrotehnik, studied the Bistričica test torrential area and the Kamniška Bistrica catchment within the municipality of Kamnik, examining certain aspects of the processes and phenomena relating to the release, transport and deposition of sediment and timber. Based on the findings from the test area, the results of joint cross-border activities and the synergistic effects of the findings from all participating partners, we have developed, as part of the project, practical technical guidelines for optimising the management of sediment and timber debris, leading to a more rational use of public funds and greater safety for residents and infrastructure.
