Action Plan for Flood Protection in the Vipava River Basin and the Development of Economic Activities Related to Water Use and Protection

The aim of the project was to develop project solutions for comprehensive flood safety measures in areas significantly affected by flooding (OPVP) in the Vipava river basin, which also present a challenge for the development of synergistic projects for economic activities linked to water use and protection, as well as the protection and restoration of the natural landscape through the conservation and potential development of habitats. The starting point for this task is the current situation, resulting from past interventions in the Vipava river basin, the partial neglect of maintenance of the River Vipava and its tributaries, and the existing water infrastructure, flood events over the last decade and the failure to carry out remediation work to address their consequences.

The planned project solutions comprising comprehensive flood protection measures in the Vipava river basin will enable the achievement of the following direct water management objectives in the Vipava river basin:

  1. ensuring flood protection in the OPVP in the catchment
  2. to ensure comprehensive water management in the catchment area by selecting optimal project solutions for the implementation of flood safety measures, taking into account technical feasibility as well as environmental and cost-effectiveness

and the following indirect development objectives in the Vipava river basin:

  1. development of the wider region:
    • economy – with an emphasis on fisheries, tourism and recreation, and agriculture
    • social aspects – improving living conditions, creating conditions for the development of new activities
  2. integration of horizontal principles for the planning and implementation of water protection measures in the catchment area:
  3. protection and restoration of the natural landscape through the conservation and potential development of habitats
  4. ensuring sufficient water supplies during periods of drought
  5. protection of the quantity and quality of water resources
